[In the time that Dunya has been gone, the Exarch has given her her privacy and not looked in on what she is doing in the Source, no matter how curious he may have been to see that things are well with his own eyes. He has to trust that she will return ere long, and trust that their efforts have not been for naught.

He may be ordered to rest by a good half of the Crystarium at this point, but rest does not mean that he can't read. In fact, that's all he's been doing since she left, seemingly incapable of not working on something when he's gone an entire century of very little actual rest.

Reading is what he's doing now, in fact, as she enters the Ocular via the portal and thus facing his back. He recognizes her presence almost the exact moment she begins to speak, but it's still startling, and he still - briefly, minutely - jumps.]

Oh! My apologies, Dunya, I hadn't expected you back so soon.

[He closes his book, but not without slipping a thin ribbon in to mark his place first. It gives him a moment to compose himself, at least.]
