in the cover of the night
Since the last one was so popular, here's a brand-new open post for all of you to post characters, mingle, and tag each other!
Seriously, post whatever you want. Empty toplevels? Open starters? Starters closed to specific people? It's all good — just enjoy!
If you feel like you need a couple of prompts to get started, though, consider any one (or a combination) of the following:
FITS: EVERYONE. No matter who you are or where you are or what you're doing, your clothes have suddenly — poof! — transformed into the Gold Saucer bunny uniform! Because now EVERYONE can wear it... EVERYONE.
PLEASE USE THE AUTO-TRANSLATE FUNCTION. You have the sudden urge to shout a phrase from the auto-translate dictionary at the nearest person! This can be a whole phrase or any combination of phrases. What are you going to yell? "We're chewing the fat"? "I seem to have misplaced my keyboard"? "Miqo'te" "rear"?!
THE CURSED SWORD. A shifty merchant sold you a remarkably beautiful Far Eastern katana for an absolute pittance — with just one catch: now that it's been in your possession for a few bells, the sword keeps whispering in your mind, telling you to
kill... kill... find stronger prey... hunt... The katana cannot be destroyed or abandoned; it is impervious to assault and any attempt to leave it by the wayside will simply find it in your belongings once more. Will your character succumb to its mystical influence? Find a new owner for it? Try to exorcise the evil spirit lurking within?
As always, tag out and have fun!

While she is quiet it is clear that she is attentive. Ever the quick learner, Era picks up on the concept rather fast. Her skills in division are questionable at best, but when she takes the time to break things down she can manage. Era does so now, pulling one of her finer quills from the spine of her codex and slowly adds 19, then 23, 29, 31. After a moment's hesitance she writes 33, then crosses it out and replaced it with 37.
Finally, Era speaks up: ] ...None that end in zero, five, or any even numbers, correct?
[ Disregarding 5, of course. She knows enough about maths that even numbers mean evenly split groupings. And it's easy to split things up into groups of five. Arcanima has, at least, taught her the bare bones of mathematics. ]

[ramza gives this reply blandly, and without any real connecting thoughts between each sentence. plainly, he expects era to be able to follow his reasoning.]

Because dividing two by one does nothing. [ It's much easier to think of division in terms of practical application on the battlefield. When she thinks of the numbers as allies or enemies. ] I shall see if the Scions have a tome on mathematics I may borrow. Or perhaps the arcanist's guild.
[ Era lets out a tired exhalation; slow. Weary. She pulls her glowing hand away from her side for now, allowing the aether held there to dissipate. There isn't much else she can do with her magic at this point - not until it has healed a bit further on its own. She'll apply a healing poultice to it later. ]
My thanks for the explanation. I am grateful for it.

[is he praising her, or praising her gratitude towards him? it's hard to say, and though it's probably the latter, he does at least look somewhat interested as he sets his pen down and looks at her with something of a dubious gaze.]
Why the sudden interest? Did aught occur within the lighthouse?
[he was there, but... hey, you can't expect him to pay attention to every single mechanic that happens while the wol is fighting...]

The machine - Construct 7 - required addition, subtraction, division, and knowledge of prime numbers. I am not quick with division.
[ She's fairly certain it concluded that she was of below-average intellect. And while it's true that perhaps Era doesn't have as much knowledge as she should for a woman nearing her thirtieth summer, she is far from stupid. Her procurement of knowledge has been mostly practical in nature, and mostly limited to the realm of combat. Her mentors have considered her rather prodigious in those areas, in fact.
...But perhaps that can be explained away by soul crystals and hard work rather than any sort of intelligence. ]
I've never had the time to learn maths.
no subject
But of course not. It would hardly be relevant to your daily life or your place in society.
[oh, gods. he's wearing that look he gets when he's about to nerd out on some big history thing.]
I scarcely had a chance to glimpse the machine ere you destroyed it, but if I had to guess, Construct 7 was of ancient Gougan make. We Garleans utilize maths in engineering and other such fields, but the Ivalicians of Delita's time had highly practical applications of advanced mathematics. The art is lost to us now, but the kingdom once employed a contingent of arithmeticians — mathemagicians, if you will. These were mages who would utilize algorithms as the basis for their spells. Purportedly, they could kill you based on such things as the measures of your vitals, or even the height of the cliff you were standing upon.
[tl;dr: the people of ivalice were just better with numbers.]
...What I am saying, in short, is that you needn't feel as though you must patch up any sort of hole in your intellect. All desire for knowledge is valuable, of course, and if you would pursue an interest in mathematics for its own sake, I would hardly discourage you — but your education is a product of the society you found yourself in. Since you had not the fortune to be born in Ivalice, it of course stands to reason that a machine of Ivalician make would have found your skills in mathematics wanting.

If math mages were employed in the past then surely there are some ancient texts on the subject going into more detail. Era doubts she would ever be skilled as an arithmetician, but she could always make an attempt if she knew where to start.
Her fascination with the information he's provided her with almost overshadows the fact that he is being nice. Era can't detect a condescending tone, either. It's enough that the young man earns a bright smile for his efforts. ]
Thank you for the information. If given the chance to return to Ridorana or Rabanastre I will need search for any recoverable texts. Arts once lost can often be found once more.
[ Actually, it makes her wonder if Ramza has an interest in all history, or just the history of his ancestors. If the former, well...
It doesn't hurt to ask, right? ]
Have you an interest in any of the ancient Eorzean civilizations?
no subject
...I know enough about Allag and Belah'dia and Amdapor and so forth, if that is your meaning. But the study of Ivalice has ever been my family's purpose, so I've not had the chance to do aught more than gloss over cursory mentions of Eorzean civilizations.
[he shakes his head.]
At any rate, it is unimportant to me. Ivalice is my chosen field of expertise. All else is irrelevant.

If ever you wish to learn more about Eorzean civilizations, pray contact me and I can escort you to some of the archaeological sites I've explored. In particular you might enjoy meeting Surito Carito, as he is one of the ancient scholars of the Nymian Royal Marines. My faerie, Lily, had original been his. We are in the process of finding a cure to the Nymian Plague, though it is slow going.
[ Exploring the sites of Eorzea's ancient civilizations has always been Era's favourite sorts of adventures, and it can be inferred from her tone that archaeology is something she enjoys. ]
