[maybe in the distant future fordola will have a redemption quest. who knows? maybe one day it'll happen.
maybe today is that day.
anyhow- here's Fordola, dressed up in simple garb with a cloak (to conceal her face in public), and given a sword that has definitely seen better days. it's not the best for the escort they're about to do but it's enough. and that's all anyone was ever inclined to give her- for safety reasons and because people wanted her to fail. no one would care much if these construction supplies didn't make it to their location. after all, these were just extra or ahead of schedule. no one was expecting these.
and she didn't have much of a choice or a say in this. other than to grit her teeth and continue to play the poor cards she'd been dealt. well, Fordola had hoped that perhaps there'd be an end to all of this. soon.
bright and early, she finished loading the cart on her own with a resilient air around her, scowling as her mood soured alongside the sun rising. when she was finally finished, she looked up to wipe the sweat off her brow and caught sight of a familiar someone.]
Huh. [she doesn't offer a smile but her mood visibly lightens at the sight of Yenh. her wishes came true.] Even the hero of the world makes time for small inconveniences like this?
[Raising her hand in welcome, Yenh smiled and squinted against the sun coming in from an angle just annoying enough. She hadn't bothered taking a path that would bring her in with the sun at her back, but part of her wishes she had, if only for not having to unobtrusively block out the low-hanging sun.]
You truly did only get the most gruesome of highlights from my mind, didn't you? I take escort and guard duties all the time.
Admittedly, in this case- [Ziplining herself magically up into the wagon, Yenh pats a stack of lumber.] When I heard you had no proctor, I volunteered myself.
As I explained before, it's not like I got to pick and choose what I saw. [mind seeing or not- she's not surprised that Yenh would do this kind of... busy work though. it's exactly the sort of work that makes folks into everyday small time heroes. so why would the warrior of light be the exception?] How noble of you.
[her tone comes off as incredibly sarcastic but really she's secretly pleased by this revelation. having someone who at least was interested in the outcome of her fate would greatly increase her chances of success compared to being paired up with those who had a vested interest in making sure this escort mission was a failure.]
At the very least, these people will have a veteran of this ilk of work to get things done.
[Fordola explaining the Echo as a method of deflection is extremely funny to Yenh, but she manages to keep her amusement to just one big white smile.]
Aye, and it pays well when you're good at it. [Not that she's getting paid by anyone.]
[Having decided the lumber pile and other goods are adequately packed, Yenh stretches her limbs out, on, and among them, getting expertly comfortable in the matter of a few wriggles and a shift of her weight.] How far are we traveling?
They wouldn't say. Probably not far considering they are expecting this to end miserably.
[she sounds a little bitter. rightly so because if they want her to fail, that's fine. but why make her fail at the detriment of the very people they both wanted to help? at the same time however, this was all just a masquerade of justice and soul weighting in her mind. she didn't entirely care for the little dramatic parading.]
But if I had to guess based off the amount of provisions we have, I suspect we will get to our destination in a day or two of travel.
[they forget that she too once traveled and escorted imperial convoys. that a mission like this, even with her poor equipment, was nothing fordola was new to. no one starts out as a leader of people in the army. everyone starts from somewhere.]
[ Yenh held her own doubts about this escort mission close to her chest. Lyse had expressed a moment of concern to no one in particular, muttering a question about if it was a setup for an ambush. At this point, the Warrior of Light knew better than to trust anyone further than she could throw them. Which, given the whole blessed aspect of her being, was decently further than your average person. But it’s not far enough. ]
[ She contemplates her inner roadmap of Gyr Albania. ]
Not too terrible a journey And I’ve brought additional rations, should it prove your provisions are meant wholly for show. Or are for the wildlife. [ And then Yenh closes her eyes—and immediately falls asleep where she is sprawled, head still propped up on her hand. ]
Aye. The thought is kind but I do know how to handle myself with far less. This isn't exactly the first trial where others expect me to fail.
[really, if she were anyone else perhaps she'd let them have their expectations of failure. but she was made of tougher things that would prove them wrong. imperialist who hated ala mhigans to ala mhigans who hated traitors; they all wanted the same fate out of Fordola. funny that two opposing sides would seem to be united under the same flag of making sure Fordola didn't succeed.
she's about to say more- to tell Yenh that her worries aren't totally misaligned when she notices the hero has fallen asleep. she offers the slumbering hero a soft smile, walking along the cart with careful observation of their surroundings. fully aware of the occasional glare directed at her by their fellow travelers but nonplussed by the ill attention.
it was embarrassing how petty they were being and yet, she persisted.
eventually they stopped for lunch and to give the chocobos a well deserved rest. only then did Fordola bother waking Yenh.]
[ This would be a great time for a dramatic dream, but there’s little more than the usual stressed-out jumble of images and noise and emotion that usually makes up her dreams. The carriage stopping and Fordola’s presence both alerted her to start waking up. Her eyes flutter open and slam shut against the light outside the covered part of the wagon. Easing them open again, her mind rushes to gather information about the world around her as quickly as it can. Danger? No, nothing like that. Yenh glances up at the sky to check the time. ]
I take it I missed very little. [ She yawns and plucks her glasses off so she can rub the sleep from her eyes. ]

rewinds to when felih was a baby adventurer, ahaha
Felih Tia is a bit of a run-of-the-mill adventurer, often scurrying about Limsa Lominsa where he's made a tentative home for himself. If not studying arcanima with the Arcanist's Guild, he's often in the Culinarian's Hall happily cooking away, rising through the ranks with ease.
His weak spot is that, at any given point in time, he's too curious for his own good.
Felih Tia, at this very moment, was now speeding across western La Noscea, holding a baby coeurl in his arms, and being pursued by a rather impressively-sized pack of wolves.
"Incoming!" he yowls at the adventurer he sees in the distance, panicked and trying his best to drive off the wolves chasing him- a few arcane spells thrown over his shoulder, but he is not stopping.
In some other universe, this scene is a tragic setup for a proverb about being too curious for your own good. Yenh, however, is determined to prevent that from coming to pass here in Eorzea—a decision made before she has even fully accessed the threat, and without that weird meta.
It is an impressive pack of wolves. Smaller and she could dispatch them with minimal effort. But this many...
She stands her ground, even as Felih overtakes her. Her sword is in her hand, and she flips it around as confidently as if it were a staff and not a naked blade. Her focus is on the lead wolves, and her weapon's focus is clicking to the bottom of her hilt. As they draw closer, her channeling completes. And in two forceful sweeps, she unleashes consecutive tethering spells into the foremost of the pack. The wolves behind the ensnared run into their packmates' arses. There is a brief yelpy pile-up.
Satisfied she bought them a few yalms of space before she has to try her trick again, she bolts after Felih. "What happened!?"
Felih pauses for only a moment when he sees that his fellow adventurer isn't also hauling ass like he is, ears up in concern before he sees the powerful wave of magic sweeping against the pack of wolves. During the moments the wolves yelp and scramble as they try to untangle themselves from each other, Felih takes the opportunity to run alongside her, panting still as he holds a bundle to his chest.
"T-They were, hhah- attacking a coeurl-" he explains between pants, "-killed it. There was a kit." Presumably, the one in his arms. "I tried to save the kit, the wolves probably thought I was trying to get at their food!" he yowls in continued stress, ears pinned back as he keeps running for dear life.
Sometimes Q'uila wonders what possesses her whenever she ends up deciding to 'Science' at the behest of Pinya and Sami but here she was, about to do something monumentally stupid.
"Hey!" She hails the stranger over, "You're a Red Mage right?"
"Brilliant! So, my party-mates and I have been arguing about whether it is possible to use Corps-a-corps to pull yourself across a gap. I wanted a second opinion before trying it out."
